The following links include websites of key organizations, conferences, and those that address issues related to critical multicultural education. 

Barack Obama for President

I encourage you to visit Barack Obama's website.  Read his positions, view videos of his speeches, and consider him as a candidate.  It is possible for our nation to move forward, past the divisions and divisive politics that have become the norm. 

In this election there is actually a candidate that has the real potential to begin to unite our nation, drastically improve our image and deeds around the world, and begin to move beyond partisan politics.  I hope you will join me in supporting, and voting for Barack Obama for President of the United States of America.   

 

American Anti-Slavery Group (iAbolish) – Educator Resources

The American Anti-Slavery Group is a critical advocacy group which provides profiles of modern abolitionists, speakers including individuals that have escaped slavery in modern times, and teacher resources for the classroom to address historic as well as modern slavery.  iAbolish also offers numerous opportunities for activism.

 

 

American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) – Education Pages

The ADC provides materials, lesson plans, and resources for educators and the general community related to Arab cultures, histories, and religion. One of the ADC programs, Reaching the Teachers Campaign, works to connect teachers directly with Arab communities around the U.S.

 

 

American Association of University Women (AAUW)

The AAUW is a leading organization for promoting education and equity for girls and women.  The organization includes the association, a legal advocacy fund, and an educational foundation.

 

American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) - Teacher Resources

The AFB provides useful information for classroom teachers, itinerant teachers, and other specialists.  The website includes tools and articles on expanded core curricula, assessment issues for children with visual impairments, inclusive education, and more.  There are also links to texts related to the education of visually impaired children from birth through adulthood. 

 

American Institute for Managing Diversity AIMD

The AIMD is a not-for-profit organization that focuses on thought leadership, education, and research in the broad field of diversity.  Their focus has been on "diversity management" which applies primarily to workplace diversity.  As AIMD grows they have begun to address issues across sectors, particularly education and business. 

 

 

Anti-Defamation League (ADL) – Education Pages

The ADL provides materials, curricula, and training for educators from early childhood through higher education. The ADL focuses on addressing issues of anti-Semitism, but also provides general anti-bias materials through a variety of educational programs, including A World of Difference and Echoes and Reflections.

 

               

Applied Research Center (ARC) & Color Lines Magazine

The ARC is an organization that provides research, and does advocacy work, for racial justice.  One of their major projects is ColorLines Magazine.  ColorLines is an outstanding resource for grassroots journalism on the intersections of class, gender, language, and nationality with race. 

 

Association for Gender Equity Leadership in Education (AGELE)

AGELE is a membership organization that is focused on gender equity issues.  AGELE holds an annual conference, conducts professional development programs and does advocacy work on issues of leadership for gender equity. 

 

 

Center for Multicultural Education

This is the website of the Center for Multicultural Education at the University of Washington, and an excellent resource for research on diversity and multicultural education.

 

Civil Rights Project (TEMPORARILY DOWN)

The Civil Rights Project at Harvard University provides news and research through a civil rights lens. Current issues in education are researched and addressed with attention to social justice. The website also includes resources like the Civil Rights Action Kits which provide “information for understanding, detecting and fighting discriminatory attitudes and actions in your school’s policies and practices.”

 

Council for Exceptional Children

Although there are serious concerns about disparate placement in special education programs, the issues related to children with various disabilities remain critically important.  The CEC provides a wealth of information and the website includes a Teaching & Learning Center with information on everything from accredidation and liscensure to subject area lesson plans. 

 

Council of the Great City Schools

This is a coalition of school systems in major cities in the US.  They provide very useful information about urban education. 

 

Diversity Web

This is a project of the American Association of Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) and provides research, job openings, and information related to diversity in higher education. 

 

 

Facing History and Ourselves

Facing History offers professional development, research and curricular resources for educators and students in the areas of history, social studies, and language arts on issues of racism, general prejudice, and anti-Semitism.

 

 

Fair Test

This website provides information, critical analysis, and advocacy concerning the testing of students in P-12 schools. 

 

Freedom Schools - a program of the Children's Defense Fund (CDF)

Freedom Schools are an academic, civic engagement, and social literacy and justice after-school and summer program.  The program engages college-age leaders to work with young students.  This is a critical program, and one that you can be directly involved in. 

 

 

Gay and Lesbian Student Education Network (GLSEN)

GLSEN is the premier organization focused on providing educational research and resources for students and educators on LGBTQI issues.

 

Human Trafficking Search

This website provides important information regarding human trafficking, child labor, forced labor, and sex slavery around the world.  The site is available in 14 languages and is a project of the National MultiCultural Institute. 

 

Highlander Research & Education Center

The Highlander Center is an extraordinary, and historical, organization.  They provide facilties (at very low rates), social action projects, and publications for educators and social activists.  It was founded by Myles Horton, and their first education director was Septima Clark...amazing history. 

 

International Association for Intercultural Education (IAIE)

The IAIE is an international organization that brings together critical multicultural educators dedicated to equity and social justice in education.  They are a membership organization that holds conferences, produces the journal Intercultural Education and other resources. 

 

Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center

The Clerc Center provides information about deafness and deaf education, as well as resources, materials, and training opportunities for educators.

 

 

MAVIN Foundation

MAVIN is the leading organization for building “healthy communities that celebrate and empower mixed heritage people and families.” The MAVIN education projects focus on supporting mixed heritage and transracially adopted students through a variety of education and advocacy programs.

 

 

Multicultural Pavilion

The Multicultural Pavilion is a resource provided by Paul Gorski and the EdChange organization. This website is the best available general resource on the internet for multicultural educators.

 

Multicultural Review

The Multicultural Review is an official publication of the Ethnic and MultiCultural Information Exchange Round Table of the AmericanLibrary Association.  This journal provides reviews of multicultural books and materials for the classroom. 

 

 

National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE)

NABE is the premier association of bilingual theorists, researchers, and educators.  The organization works to promote the most effective education of second language learners as well as English language learning through bilingual education. 

 

 

National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME)

NAME is the premier association of multicultural theorists, researchers, and educators. The organization is dedicated to the advancement of equity and excellence in education. NAME is where leaders in the field come together with the new generation of critical multicultural educators.

 

 

National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE)

NADOHE is an organization of diversity professionals in higher education.  As colleges and universities continue to develop their approaches to diversity on campus, this organization provides a forum for chief diversity officers and senior diversity professionals. 

 

 

National Conference on Race & Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE)

This is a critical conference for academics because it provides the opportunity to engage in dialogue about the latest issues on college campuses related to race and ethnicity as well as practical applications of related theory and research. 

 

National Consortium of Directors of Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Resources in Higher Education

The Consortium is a membership association of directors that works to promote equity for LGBT students, faculty, and staff in higher education.  Their website includes a directory of LGBT centers at colleges/universities around the country and a list of conferences among other resources. 

 

 

National MultiCultural Institute (NMCI)

NMCI provides a unique opportunity for diversity professionals to engage with peers across sectors.  Educators, psychologists, corporate and not-for-profit professionals are able to compare and contrast experiences, challenges and successes as well as work on ways to work together on issues related to diversity and multiculturalism. 

 

 

National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (NNIRR)

The NNIRR provides a wide range of resources and information regarding immigrant and refugee rights. The Building a Race and Immigration Dialogue in the Global Economy (BRIDGE) Project curriculum brings issues related to immigrant and refugee rights to the classroom.

 

New York Collective of Radical Educators (NYCORE)

NYCoRE is an organization based in New York City that puts on events, provides research, and runs projects related to a wide range of critical social justice issues in schools.

 

Race & Pedagogy Project

The Race & Pedagogy Project is an initiative of the University of California – Santa Barbara and includes practical lesson plans and a research archive that focuses on the intersections of race with other dimensions of diversity. This research is useful to both educators and students.

 

Rethinking Schools Online

Rethinking schools is an outstanding P-12 resource.  They produce the Rethinking Schools journal, multiple publications for educators (including Rethinking Mathematics, Rethinking Our Classrooms, and Open Minds to Equality), and provide numerous online resources including articles and useful links for P-12 educators and community activists. 

 

 

SoJust.net - A Document History of Social Justice

SoJust.net provides an outstanding collection of critical source documentation related to social justice. Historic records related to anti-racism, suffrage, gay rights, labor activism, and other movements including speeches, declarations, legal acts, poems, literature, letters, songs and essays are available on this website.

 

 

Teaching for Change

This is primarily a resource for teaching materials for multicultural educators.  They have some great classroom resources as well as professional development materials. 

 

White Privilege Conference

This conference brings together a truly unique cross-section of educators, community activists, and students to discuss issues related to white privilege.  The conference provides the opportunity to engage in dialogue across disciplines and address intersections of power, privilege, and oppression in a variety of contexts.
